Preparing some of the ingredients ahead of time can reduce the amount of stress you feel when it is time to prepare the meal.

Bake pie crusts a little longer than you would think they should be baked. Let the crust go beyond light tan to a deeper, golden shade. This is because the golden color lets you know that the sugar from the crust has caramelized, which give it that sweet, yet crisp taste.

When you are cooking a stir-fry, ensure the meat is sliced to be very thin, and cut it on the bias. This may take some patience and it can be a bit time-consuming. Once the meat is firm, not frozen, cut across the grain at a 45-degree angle.

Place meat in the freezer for a few minutes to make slicing easier. If you are making Asian dishes, such as Thai or Chinese food, this is a great idea. When the meat is frozen slightly, cutting it is easier because the fibers in the muscle do not tear or stretch when slicing. Make sure that you let the meat thaw before cooking, so the meat is cooked evenly.

Do not throw away the product of your hard work. Combine 1 tablespoon corn starch with 2 tablespoons water, and stir together in a separate bowl. Stir this solution into the thin sauce to thicken it. Add your starch slowly, then stir constantly to not over-thicken it.

Apples are used in cooking mostly during the fall, but you must make sure they are properly kept so that they do not rot. Apples keep best when they are stored in a cool location where there is plenty of air circulation. Make sure to check on them regularly, as one rotten apple means the rest are soon to follow.

When cooking or preparing for someone important, such as your boss or a new date, it is best to cook food that you are good at. Don’t try to create a new dish when you’re not experienced in cooking it already. This will allow you to cook with less stress.

Fresh Ingredients

Do you feel like you’re wasting money when you throw away a piece of moldy fruit? Have you ever thought to just remove the moldy section by cutting it out? Trying to salvage fruit when half of it is bad may save money, but it is not worth the health risks. The fruit needs to be thrown as away as some of the mold may not be visible and can cause you to become ill.

Fresh ingredients are better than frozen or dried, regardless of what you cook. The more fresh ingredients you use in your cooking, the better your dishes will be. Fresh ingredients have more flavor, and are less costly than frozen and canned ingredients.

People tend to use a lot of apples for cooking in the fall and winter months, but if they are stored incorrectly they will quickly spoil. Warm, dry air rots apples quickly, so keep them in sealed or tied plastic bags and make sure they are stored in a refrigerator or a chilly basement. Watch your apples so that you can catch any rotten ones, a rotten apple will make the others spoil.

Baking mixes, flour and sugar should all be stored in airtight packaging. Airtight containers are advantageous for several reasons. They prevent air exposure from lessening the freshness of your foods, and they also keep the bugs out. They can be bought in lots of places, and it is an investment worth making.

If you wish to have crispy French fries, then you should soak the potatoes in cool water for 30 minutes and then fry them. When potatoes are allowed to absorb cold water, the texture is able to withstand the extreme heat of cooking without breaking down and becoming mushy.

Sauteing vegetables in a bit of broth is a healthy cooking method. Doing so will add a great deal of flavor to your vegetables, and help them maintain their nutritional content. This is a tasty way to cook your veggies.

You can reduce the fat and calorie content of regular mashed potatoes by substituting part of the potatoes with mashed cauliflower. This won’t affect the taste but it adds a handful of nutrition. Because cauliflower has a pretty bland taste, it blends well with the potatoes and enhances the flavors of the other ingredients. As a bonus, cauliflower is the same texture and color as potatoes, so no one will be the wiser when you improve the nutritional content and lower the caloric content of your mashed potatoes.

When purchasing your ingredients for preparing a recipe, you should read all of the labels. There are many common supplies in cooking that contain unhealthy ingredients that are hidden. You want to produce a product that is not high in sugar or sodium.

Garlic can easily stay on your hands. To avoid the lingering, strong odor from working with odoriferous cooking ingredients, thoroughly rub you hands on the stainless steel surface of your kitchen sink. Rubbing your hands on the stainless steel, helps remove the odor from your hands, so that every other food you touch does not smell like garlic also.

Add the seasonings a little at a time throughout the cooking process. When this is done, the flavors of the food will be enhanced, and you will be bringing out the best in all of your ingredients.

Ice trays can be a great tool for freezing sauces. When you need sauce for another meal, you already have individual portions, ready to grab and reheat in a pan. The sauce is still good after it is frozen.

Do not use any kind of wine in your cooking that you haven’t tasted on your own. The taste of the wine will be reflected in your meal. There are cooking wines available.

When it’s time to cook your meat, has it ever been an issue trying to decide how long to grill it for? It is always a good idea to use a quality meat thermometer (preferably a digital one for precise reading) to make sure the inside is also cooked properly. For meat that is more than an inch and a half thick, you might want to close the lid of the grill to decrease the cooking time.

If you tend to cook with a lot of herbs and spices, make sure that you are storing them somewhere that’s cool and dark in order to keep them fresh. Do not store herbs and spices in cabinets over the stove, and avoid storing them in other warm areas, as their flavor will dissipate and you will have wasted your money.

All sugars, flours, and mixes should be stored in airtight containers. These containers keep your food safe from pests and help your items stay fresh by sealing out the unwanted air. Almost every store has some form of them, and they are usually inexpensive.

Many vegetable and herbs give off a smell that tends to remain in your chopping board, even though you scrub it over and over again. Mark your ends on the cutting board using indelible ink so that you can remember one side from the other.

Before you begin to cook, your utensils should be clean. Leftover food could really screw up your next dish. Failure to clean utensils properly could also spread food borne illness.

Make preparing a complicated meal easier by doing some preparation the night before. Get everything together beforehand; ensure you have all the ingredients, and chop or measure anything you can in advance. Now all that is left is to assemble the dish and toss it in the oven!

Before chopping fresh herbs sprinkle some salt on the cutting board. Not only does this add a little extra flavor, it keeps the herbs you are chopping where you want them – on the board. Don’t add any additional salt to the food while you’re preparing it, or it may become too salty. The salt will stick to the herbs and make their flavor stronger.

When you are cooking pasta, use a fair amount of salt in the water. This allows the seasoning to soak into the pasta, which will retain its flavor. Salt and seasonings do not necessarily stick very well to cooked pasta, so seasoning it while it boils is your best bet to enhance the flavor.

Make all the preparations for your food before you begin to cook it. This way, you can prevent distractions like hot oil in pans or other distractions. You can also save on gas and heat by not turning on appliances before you are ready.

If you’d like to boost the flavors in your pasta sauce, it’s important to save the water you use to cook the pasta itself. Save approximately 1/4 cup of water after cooking your pasta. When you’re ready to combine the pasta and sauce, pour in a bit of the water. The combination of water and the starch from the pasta will give your sauce body and creaminess.

It is important to have great cutting utensils at your disposal in your kitchen. Dull knives make everything take longer and are also more dangerous. More accidental cuts occur when using a dull knife, instead of a good sharp one.

Wooden Cutting

Of course getting a meals ready for a vast amount of people can be a bit stressful. Take care of wooden cutting boards properly. Heat, moisture and other elements can cause warping and splitting of the wood. It is important to never immerse a wooden cutting board entirely in water. Using a sponge soaked in warm, soapy water is the best way to clean it. You can do some restoration to a damaged board by regularly oiling it with a product specifically for this purpose. Allow it to dry completely before using.

If you are working with foods that have strong odors, such as fish, garlic or onions, remove the smell from your hands by rubbing them on something that is stainless steel, prior to washing them. Try using a spoon, the side of the sink, or a “soap bar,” this can cause your hands to again be fresh and odor-free.

Keep your spices and herbs fresh by not exposing them to humidity and light. Spices will rapidly lose flavor if exposed to heat, light or humidity. This will only expose your spices to elements that will make them less flavorful and aromatic.

Take the stress out of complex dishes by lining up all the ingredients before you start cooking. This way, you will never find yourself halfway through a recipe and without something you need.
